Business Meeting Minutes

 

The Brevard Soil and Water Conservation District met in a regular public session on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024, at 4:00 P.M., at Agricultural Center, 3695 Lake Drive, Cocoa, FL 32926

 

Board Members Present:         Bud Crisafulli, Chair

                                                      Chris McMaster, Treasurer

                                                      Jim Fletcher, Vice Chair

                                              

 

Staff Members Present:       Derrick Wyle, USDA NRCS, District Conservationist

                                                   Joe Walter, UF IFAS Brevard County Agricultural Agent

                                                  Beth Shephard, UF IFAS Brevard County Extension Director

The meeting was called to order at 4:04 P.M. by Bud C.

 

Announcement

Beth reported that since the December meeting, Anna has resigned for a new position, and we have hired a new program assistant. He will be starting January 20, 2024.

 

Review and Approval of the Current Treasurer’s Report

The balance of the account is $49,562.79 after all checks have cleared.  The treasurer's report was approved.

 

Review and Approval of Minutes for the prior Board of Supervisors meeting

The December Minutes were not available and will be approved in February with the January minutes.

District Conservationist Update

a.       Over 54 applications have been received through their office for grant funding opportunities. The increase is attributed to the additional spring sign-up, the hurricane, and the efforts from Joe and Derrick to promote opportunities as they arise.

 

Old Business

a.       The Canaveral Marsh cleanup was completed on December 15th by Extension staff.

b.      The long-range plan for the upcoming year was postponed.

c.       Support for Legislative Luncheon – Chris M. made a motion to desist from supporting the Legislative Luncheon held in 2023. There was a second by Bud Crisafulli. The motion passed.

 

New Business

a.       A new bill was introduced in the House and the Senate regarding the future of soil and water boards in the state of Florida.  The board agreed they need to watch how it progresses.

b.      Ag Tour: the board wants to see an Ag Tour set up for this year; they are willing to support this opportunity financially and are looking to UF/IFAS Extension to organize and deliver.

c.       The board asked UF/IFAS Extension in Brevard to bring a presentation of program needs and Agriculture programs that need support to the February meeting.
